Travel Tips Of Sharbhanga Ashram

Chitrakoot, Madhya Pradesh, India
Sharbhanga Ashram is a highly significant, yet relatively remote, pilgrimage site mentioned prominently in the Ramayana, associated with the revered sage Sharbhanga. The Sage Sharbhanga and Ram's Visit: Maharishi Sharbhanga was one of the greatest sages who lived in the Dandaka forest, known for his rigorous penance and deep spiritual knowledge. The ashram's fame rests on the account of Lord Ram, Goddess Sita, and Lord Lakshman visiting the sage here during their exile. According to the epic, Ram visited Sharbhanga just after he arrived in the Dandaka forest and the sage was about to shed his mortal coil, having achieved mastery over yoga and spiritual detachment. The Pursuit of Dharma: The sage Sharbhanga was waiting for Lord Ram's arrival. Upon meeting Ram, Sharbhanga requested Ram to show him the right path to the spiritual world, and in turn, guided Ram on his further journey in the Dandaka forest. Having fulfilled his life's purpose by having the Darshan (sight) of Lord Ram, the sage immolated himself in a yogic fire, sacrificing his body and ascending to Brahmaloka (the abode of Brahma). The site is therefore a powerful symbol of renunciation, detachment, and the ultimate reward of devotion. The Transformation and Teachings: The spot where Sharbhanga performed his final sacrifice is the main spiritual point of the ashram. Lord Ram was deeply moved by the sage's detachment and his profound wisdom. The sage's teachings to Ram about the nature of existence and the duty of a ruler are considered philosophical highlights of the Ramayana. The ashram complex today houses a temple and a sacred fire pit (Yajna Kunda) commemorating this monumental spiritual event, serving as a reminder of the fleeting nature of the material body. The remote, forest location adds to the feeling of separation from the mundane world.

Tourism Tips

Given the distance and forest location, preparations for Sharbhanga Ashram are more focused on logistics and safety than for the central city sites.

Health & Safety:

Snake Awareness and First Aid: Since the ashram is deep inside a natural forest, it is vital to be aware of the potential presence of wild animals and snakes. Do not wander off the main paths, and wear closed footwear. Carry a comprehensive first-aid kit, and ensure your vehicle has a spare tire and emergency repair tools. Inform your hotel or local contacts about your travel plan and estimated return time.

Packing Essentials:

Proper Clothing and Provisions: Carry adequate food and snacks, as there are virtually no commercial shops or eateries near the ashram. Carry enough bottled water for the entire trip. For photography, a zoom lens is recommended to capture wildlife from a distance. A power bank for your mobile phone is a necessity due to the long travel time.

Accommodation:

Base in Chitrakoot Town: All visitors should arrange their accommodation in the main Chitrakoot town near Ram Ghat or Karwi and plan the trip to Sharbhanga as a return-day excursion. There are no safe, commercial lodging options near the ashram itself. Ensure your hotel or driver knows you are leaving early and returning late.

Other Tips:

Local Guide and Vehicle: It is highly advisable to hire a local, registered guide or, at the very least, a driver who is extremely familiar with the specific forest route. Inform the driver about the waiting time beforehand and negotiate a total round-trip fare, including the waiting period. Mobile network connectivity can be intermittent or completely absent in the final stretch, so plan accordingly and do not rely on GPS for the last few kilometers.
