Lum Sohpetbneng

Shillong, Meghalaya, India
Place Overview: Lum Sohpetbneng, standing at an altitude of 1,343 meters, is much more than just a scenic hilltop; it is the most sacred site for the indigenous Khasi people. According to Khasi mythology, this peak is the "Navel of Heaven," where a golden vine once connected the celestial world to t he earth. It is believed that sixteen families originally descended from heaven via this vine, and while nine returned, seven stayed back to become the ancestors of the Hynniewtrep (Khasi) people. The site is a powerful symbol of the spiritual bond between man and the divine creator. Visiting Lum Sohpetbneng is a serene experience that combines history, myth, and natural beauty. The trek to the summit is relatively easy and takes you through dense pine forests and vibrant wildflower patches. Once you reach the top, you are rewarded with a panoramic view of the Umiam Lake and the rolling hills of the Ri-Bhoi district. The atmosphere at the peak is incredibly peaceful, making it a favorite spot for meditation and spiritual reflection. For the Khasis, it is a place of pilgrimage where they reconnect with their roots and offer prayers for the well-being of their community. The peak is also significant for its ecological value, housing several species of endemic plants and birds. The sense of tranquility here is profound, far removed from the touristy crowds of Shillong city. It offers a rare opportunity to understand the deep-seated spiritual beliefs of the Khasi tribe and their profound reverence for nature as a manifestation of the divine.
