Chausath Yogini Temple

Bhedaghat, Madhya Pradesh, India
Built in the 10th-11th century by the Kalachuri dynasty King Yuvaraja II, this is one of the four major Chausath Yogini temples in India: Despite its name (Chausath means 64), this temple exceptionally has 81 circular shrines (or cells) dedicated to the Yoginis, a sign of royal patronage: It is situ ated atop a hill, accessible by climbing about 150 steps, which offers a panoramic view of the Narmada River and the surrounding Bhedaghat gorge: Historical Significance:The temple was originally a center for the Tantric cult of Yoginis and was later converted into a Gauri-Shankar temple (dedicated to Shiva and Parvati) in 1155 CE:
