Chattar Manzil, also known as the 'Umbrella Palace,' is one of the most distinct and recognizable architectural landmarks in Lucknow. It is a historical palace complex that once served as a royal residence for the Nawabs of Awadh and their wives. The palace was started by Nawab Ghazi-ud-Din Haidar a nd completed by his successor, Nawab Nasir-ud-Din Haidar. Its name, 'Chattar Manzil' (Umbrella Palace), comes from the umbrella-shaped dome (Chattar) crowning its main structure, a unique feature that blends various architectural traditions. The building is a fascinating fusion of Indo-European and Awadhi architectural styles, reflecting the eclectic taste of the Nawabi rulers. Historically, it played a vital role during the 1857 War of Independence, serving as a center of resistance and later as a refuge for the British. After independence, the palace was taken over by the Government of India and currently houses the office of the Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI). While parts of the complex are not publicly accessible due to their current use, the grand facade, the unique dome, and the overall structure remain a major tourist attraction. The palace, situated right on the bank of the River Gomti, offers a picturesque setting, especially at sunset. The ongoing restoration efforts aim to preserve its historical grandeur.
