FAQs On Saralasagar Project

Wanaparthy, Telangana, India
The Saralasagar Project is a significant, post-independence hydraulic engineering marvel located near Madanapur in the Wanaparthy district. Completed in 1959 and drawing water from the Krishna River, the project stands out for its utilization of the unique siphon spillway technology, which was adapt ed from designs in California, USA. This makes it the second largest dam in Asia to employ this self-activating mechanism, where the water's own pressure initiates the discharge process without the need for manual gates, earning it the moniker, 'The Dam with no Gates'. Initiated by Raja Rameshwara Rao of the Wanaparthy Samsthanam in 1947 and named after his mother, Sarala Devi, the reservoir irrigates over 4,182 acres of agricultural land, transforming the local agrarian economy and demonstrating the visionary leadership of the erstwhile princely state rulers. The reservoir's capacity is approximately 0.55 TMC (Thousand Million Cubic Feet), and its vast water spread provides a picturesque, tranquil setting, making it a popular spot for local picnics and nature enthusiasts. The historical connection, the unique technology, and the scenic water body make Saralasagar a crucial landmark, symbolizing the blend of traditional vision and modern engineering in the region. The project's dedication to the public good highlights its role in the socio-economic development of the entire district of Wanaparthy, standing as a testament to engineering excellence that continues to serve the local farming community by providing essential irrigation.
