Grand Anicut

Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, India
Kallanai, also known as the Grand Anicut, is an ancient dam built across the Kaveri River by the Chola King Karikalan in the 2nd Century AD. It is celebrated as one of the oldest water-diversion structures in the world that is still in use today. The dam was constructed to divert water from the Kav eri into the fertile delta region for irrigation while preventing floods from entering the Kollidam branch. Its survival for nearly 2,000 years is a miracle of ancient engineering, utilizing massive unhewn stones sunk into the riverbed. During the British era, Sir Arthur Cotton was so impressed by its design that he used it as a model for modern dams. Today, it serves as a major irrigation hub and a popular picnic spot for locals. The area around the dam is scenic, with the roaring sound of water and lush greenery. It is a place where history meets utility, showing how ancient Indians mastered hydraulic engineering. The bridge over the dam offers a panoramic view of the river splitting into multiple branches. Visitors can see the heavy stone masonry that has withstood the force of the Kaveri for centuries. It is a symbol of the prosperity that the Chola dynasty brought to the Tamil region. :

The dam is a massive structure made of unhewn stones and is 329 meters (1,079 feet) long and 20 meters (66 feet) wide. It stands about 5. 4 meters (18 feet) high. The unique feature is the "interlocking" technology used without any modern cementing material, allowing the stones to stay in place despite the high water pressure. The dam has a curved shape to withstand the river's flow. During the 19th century, the British added a road bridge and improved the sluice gates, but the core foundation remains the original Chola structure. The architecture is purely functional yet aesthetically magnificent in its scale.
