Thiruvaiyaru Panchanadeeswarar Temple

Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, India
The Aiyarappar Temple or Panchanadeeswarar Temple is one of the most ancient and grandest Shiva temples in South India. The name Thiruvaiyaru means "Five Rivers," referring to the Cauvery and its four tributaries that flow nearby. The temple is known as Dakshina Kailasam (Kailash of the South). Leg end states that the great saint Appar had a vision of Lord Shiva's abode, Mount Kailash, at this very spot. The temple is massive, covering nearly 15 acres, with five "prakarams" (enclosures) and seven "gopurams." The main deity, Lord Aiyarappar, is a Swayambu Lingam. Uniquely, there is no separate Vishnu temple in this town because the Goddess Dharmasamvardhini is said to be an incarnation of Vishnu himself. The temple is famous for its acoustic marvels, particularly a spot where one's voice echoes seven times. It is a major center for Saivism and has been patronized by Chola, Pandya, and Maratha kings over centuries.
