The Hussainabad Clock Tower, often simply called Ghanta Ghar, is an iconic, towering monument located near the Chota Imambara in the old city of Lucknow. Standing at an impressive height of 221 feet (67 meters), it is widely believed to be the tallest clock tower in India. It was built in 1881 by Na wab Nasir-ud-Din Haidar's younger brother, Nawab Nasir-ud-Din Haidar, using a donation from the Husainabad Trust, to mark the arrival of Sir George Couper, the Lieutenant Governor of Awadh. The tower was designed by the architect Richard Roskell Bayne and showcases a distinct Victorian-Gothic style, a fusion of traditional British and local architectural sensibilities. The clock on the tower has a massive pendulum and a complex winding mechanism, which was considered an engineering marvel of its time. The tower's style is often likened to the famous Big Ben in London. Today, the tower stands as a majestic, towering landmark over the surrounding old city, serving as a powerful visual anchor for the historic Husainabad area.
