Historical Overview: Palamu Fort is a historical marvel located in the dense forests of the Latehar district. It consists of two spectacular forts, the Old Fort and the New Fort, built during the 16th and 17th centuries. These structures were the seats of power for the Chero dynasty kings who ruled over the region for generations. The Old Fort was originally constructed by the kings of the Raksel dynasty but was later occupied and renovated by King Medini Ray. The New Fort was exclusively built by Raja Medini Ray on an adjoining hill to provide a better defensive advantage. These forts witnessed numerous battles between the tribal kings, the Mughals, and eventually the British East India Company. The site is now under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and remains a primary attraction for history buffs. Surrounded by the Betla National Park, the forts offer a unique blend of heritage and wildlife. The walls of the fort are still standing strong, telling tales of the legendary King Medini Ray, who is celebrated as a just and powerful ruler in local folklore.
