The Mamaleshwar Temple, also known as the Mamal Temple, is a small but profoundly significant Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the oldest existing temples in the Kashmir Valley, believed to date back to the 4th century AD. It is located at an altitude of 7,200 feet, situated pictur esquely on the left bank of the holy Lidder River. The temple is deeply steeped in local legend, most notably being the very place where Lord Ganesha was placed as a doorkeeper by his mother, Goddess Parvati, and where Lord Shiva famously beheaded him for denying entry, eventually replacing his head with that of an elephant. The name 'Mam Mal' is a Kashmiri phrase meaning "don't go" or "don't leave," a direct reference to the divine instruction given to Ganesha. The temple structure is modest, built entirely of locally sourced grey stone, featuring a two-tiered pyramidal roof, a common feature of ancient Kashmiri architecture. Historically, it was lavishly decorated by King Jayasimha in the medieval period. In front of the sanctum, there is a small rectangular stone-enclosed tank or basin fed by a natural spring that surrounds the ancient Shiva Lingam inside, providing a cool, serene atmosphere and adding a sacred dimension to the site. The site offers a peaceful retreat for reflection and prayer, embodying a confluence of deep religious history and stunning natural beauty in Pahalgam.
