A Historical Overview of the Museum: The Archaeological Museum was originally established in 1910 by W.A. Jardine, a British political agent, and was initially named the Jardine Museum. It was later taken over by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and renamed. Its primary function is to preser ve and display the detached and fragmented sculptures and architectural pieces recovered from the ruins of the various Khajuraho temples. The collection is extensive, housing over 2,000 artifacts, and provides a crucial context for understanding the temples before visiting them. The exhibits are categorized to represent the three main faiths in the region during the 10th to 12th centuries A.D.: Hindu (Brahmanical), Buddhist, and Jain. The museum serves as an academic and historical complement to the standing monuments, allowing visitors to appreciate the intricate details of the sculptures up close.

How to Reach

By Air: Fly to Khajuraho Airport (HJR), then take a taxi or auto-rickshaw (5-7 KMS) to the museum which is located close to the Western Group of Temples.

By Train: Arrive at Khajuraho Railway Station (KURJ), then take an auto-rickshaw or taxi (3-4 KMS). Satna Railway Station (STA) is the long-distance railhead (116 KMS).

By Road: Easily accessible as it is on the main road near the major temple complex. Auto-rickshaws and cycle-rickshaws are readily available.

By Local Transport: It is a short walk or quick auto-rickshaw ride from the town center, making it highly accessible. Many tourists walk over after visiting the Western Group.
