Gurudwara Charan Kanwal, located in the village of Jindowal near Banga, is one of the most historically significant Sikh shrines in the Nawanshahr district. The name "Charan Kanwal" literally translates to "Lotus Feet," signifying the arrival of the holy feet of the sixth Sikh Guru, Guru Hargobind Ji. According to historical accounts, the Guru came here after winning the battle of Kartarpur against the Mughal commander Painde Khan. It is said that the Guru stayed at this spot for nearly a month to allow his wounded horse, Suhela, to recover and receive treatment. During his stay, he blessed a local landlord named Jeeva, who served the Guru with great devotion. The village was subsequently named Jindowal in honor of this devotee. The Gurudwara complex is a sprawling area that exudes a sense of ancient history and deep spiritual vibration. It is a place where the family of the Guru, including the young Guru Tegh Bahadur and Guru Har Rai, also stayed, making it a site blessed by multiple Sikh Gurus. The presence of a large Sarovar (holy tank) adds to the serenity of the place, where devotees take a dip to cleanse their souls. The management is under the SGPC, ensuring that the traditions and sanctity are maintained with high standards. For visitors, the Gurudwara offers a profound insight into the military and spiritual life of the sixth Guru, blending the concepts of Miri (temporal power) and Piri (spiritual authority). The daily Kirtan and the distribution of Langar continue the tradition of selfless service that the Guru established centuries ago.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest airport is Amritsar (ATQ), about 125 KMS away, or Chandigarh (IXC), which is 100 KMS away. Both airports are well-connected by road to Banga. You can take a taxi directly to the Gurudwara from either airport.

By Train: Banga Railway Station is just 2 KMS away from the Gurudwara. For travelers coming from Delhi or other major cities, Phagwara Junction is a better option as many express trains stop there. From Phagwara, it’s a 20-minute drive to the shrine.

By Road: The Gurudwara is located just off the Phagwara-Chandigarh Highway. It is easily accessible by car or bus. Any bus heading towards Chandigarh or Ropar from Jalandhar/Phagwara will stop at the Banga bypass, from where the Gurudwara is a short distance.

By Local Transport: Within Banga, you can take an auto-rickshaw or a cycle-rickshaw to reach the Jindowal area where the Gurudwara is situated. The transport is very cheap and readily available throughout the day.
