Lakshman Jhula

Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, India
Lakshman Jhula is an iconic suspension bridge that spans the Ganges River, connecting the villages of Tapovan (Tehri Garhwal district) and Jonk (Pauri Garhwal district). The original bridge, a jute rope structure, is believed to have been built by Lord Rama's brother, Lakshman, to cross the river. T he current iron suspension bridge was constructed in 1929 after a flood destroyed the original. It stretches approximately 137 meters (450 feet) and stands about 21 meters (70 feet) above the river. Note: Due to safety concerns regarding its age and increasing foot traffic, the old Lakshman Jhula was permanently closed to pedestrian and two-wheeler traffic in 2019. The surrounding area, however, remains a major tourist hub, famous for its vibrant market, temples (Lakshman Temple, Tera Manzil Temple), and bustling riverside cafes. It remains an essential cultural landmark and is now primarily viewed from a distance or by walking nearby lanes. The nearby Janki Setu and Ram Jhula now serve the primary crossing needs.
