How To Reach Lal Draman

Bhaderwah, Jammu and Kashmir, India
A Serene Hill Station Known for its Cultural Vibrancy: Lal Draman, which translates literally to Red Meadows in the local language, is an enchanting, expansive hill station and high-altitude meadow located at an elevation of approximately 8,900 ft (2,700 m) above sea level in the Doda district, situ ated roughly 55 KMs from Bhaderwah town via the road network that passes through Doda town itself. It is specifically located about 25 KMs north of Doda town near Sazan Village. The meadow is a picture of pristine natural beauty, carpeted with soft green grass and completely surrounded by towering, stately forests of majestic Deodar (Cedar) and Fir trees, which provide a deeply serene and cooling atmosphere, making it an extremely popular destination for summer picnics and general relaxation. Although the name suggests a red hue, which it might get from certain grasses or flora during specific seasons, its most famous feature is not its color but its role as the annual host of a significant local cultural and tourism festival, the Grameen-cum-Tourism Mela, which showcases the rich, unique cultural heritage, traditional music, and dance of the Doda district and the broader Chenab Valley region, drawing thousands of visitors and local residents every year. The journey to Lal Draman is a picturesque drive up to Bijarni Village, with the final 3 KMs requiring a short and pleasant trek on foot, which is easily manageable for most visitors, ensuring that the destination retains a sense of natural tranquility and a welcome escape from the commercial intensity of city life, and in the winter, the meadow transforms into a prime location for enjoyable snow sports like skiing.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest air travel hub is Jammu Airport (IXJ), which is situated approximately 200 KMs away from the base town of Bhaderwah (and about 175 KMs from Doda town), requiring a long road journey of around 6-7 hours. From the airport, hiring a pre-arranged private taxi is the recommended mode of transport to reach Doda or Bhaderwah, which are the main access points to the meadow's roadhead.

By Train: The closest functional railway station is Udhampur Railway Station (UHP), situated at a road distance of roughly 120 KMs from Bhaderwah, which is the most convenient railway access point. From the railway station, travelers must hire a taxi or use a shared jeep service to travel the mountainous road route to Doda town (95 KMs) or Bhaderwah town (120 KMs), and from there, arrange local transport for the final road leg to Bijarni Village.

By Road: Lal Draman is accessible by road via Doda town, which is connected by the NH-244 highway. From Doda town, a motorable road covers the approximately 23 KMs distance to Bijarni Village, taking about 1 hour to drive. From Bijarni, the final leg of the journey is a mandatory 3 KMs trek on foot through a gentle, well-defined forest path to reach the scenic meadow itself, which is a pleasant and short hike suitable for all ages, making it highly accessible compared to other high-altitude destinations.

By Local Transport: The best local transport from Doda or Bhaderwah to the Bijarni Village roadhead is a hired local taxi or a shared jeep, which is the most economical option and can be arranged from the main taxi stands in the towns. For the final 3 KM on foot, hiring a local porter to carry heavy picnic items or camping gear is an optional but highly recommended local service, ensuring a comfortable and relaxing final ascent to the beautiful meadow.
