How To Reach Musafirkhana Mosque
Davangere, Karnataka, India
The Musafirkhana Mosque is a spectacular historical structure located on the western side of the famous Santhebennur Pushkarani. Built in the 17th century by Ranadullakhan, a commander of the Bijapur Sultanate, this structure originally served as a rest house or "Musafirkhana" for travelers and lat er as a prayer hall. It is a massive granite building that showcases the fusion of Islamic and local architectural styles. The building stands as a testament to the diverse cultural history of the Davangere district, where Hindu and Islamic influences coexisted and evolved. Visitors are often awestruck by its sturdy construction and the sheer scale of the pillared hall, which remains remarkably cool even during the peak of summer. The Musafirkhana Mosque is managed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and is part of a larger heritage complex that includes the sacred pond and the Rama Temple. It offers a glimpse into the military and social history of the region during the transition from the Vijayanagara Empire to the Bijapur Sultanate rule. The site is a favorite for history buffs and architecture students who wish to study the robust granite masonry techniques of the medieval era.
