How To Reach Qila Mubarak

Bathinda, Punjab, India
Ancient Origins: Qila Mubarak, also historically known as Gobindgarh Fort, is considered one of India's oldest surviving forts, with its original construction dating back possibly to the 6th century CE. The fort's bricks have been traced back to the Kushana Period, suggesting its extreme antiquity. It is believed to have been constructed by Raja Dab, an ancestor of Vena Pal, to defend against the invading Hunas, highlighting its original strategic military purpose. Historical Significance: The fort has played a pivotal role in the history of Punjab and the Delhi Sultanate. Most famously, it was here that Razia Sultan (1236-1240 CE), the first and only woman to rule the Delhi throne, was imprisoned after her defeat by Malik Altunia, the then Governor of Bathinda. This event is a central part of its historical narrative. Sikh Gurus' Visits: The fort also holds profound religious significance for Sikhs. It was visited by three Sikh Gurus: Guru Nanak Dev Ji in 1515, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji around 1665, and Guru Gobind Singh Ji in 1705 after the Battle of Muktsar. To commemorate the latter's visit, two important Gurdwaras were later constructed within the complex, cementing its importance to the faith. Later Rule and Restoration: In 1754, Baba Ala Singh of the Patiala state took control and renamed it Gobindgarh in honor of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. The fort is now a monument of national importance, maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), which is continuously undertaking restoration work to preserve its ancient structure.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest major airports are Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport in Amritsar (ATQ, 185 KMS) and Chandigarh International Airport (IXC, 210 KMS). From the airport, a taxi or train can be taken to Bathinda.

By Train: Arrive at Bathinda Railway Station (BTI). The fort is located very close to the station (approx. 1-2 KMS). From the station, the fort is easily reached by a very short ride in a cycle-rickshaw, auto-rickshaw, or app-based taxi, as it is situated right in the heart of the old city.

By Road: Bathinda is a well-connected city on major national and state highways. Regular bus services from Delhi, Chandigarh, Patiala, and Amritsar drop passengers at the main Bathinda Bus Stand. From the bus stand, the fort is just a 3-4 KMS ride by local transport. Given its central location, it can be reached on foot from many parts of the old city.

By Local Transport: Due to its position in the bustling, narrow streets of the old city, the best final mode of transport is a local auto-rickshaw or cycle-rickshaw. These smaller vehicles can navigate the congested market lanes right up to the fort's entrance more easily than large private cars or taxis.
