How To Reach Ram Jhula

Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, India:
Introduction and Overview: Ram Jhula is a significant iron suspension bridge built across the holy Ganga River in Rishikesh, serving as a vital link between the Sivananda Ashram area and the Swargashram/Parmarth Niketan side of the town. This pedestrian-friendly bridge (though two-wheelers are often seen) is slightly larger than the nearby Laxman Jhula, with a length of 450 feet (137 meters), and was constructed in 1986. It is a major spiritual and tourist landmark, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Ganga river, the surrounding Shivalik hills, and the numerous ashrams and temples lining the banks. The name 'Ram Jhula' is inspired by Lord Rama, the central figure of the epic Ramayana. Walking across the bridge is an essential Rishikesh experience, filled with the sounds of temple bells, vendors, and the flowing river. It is a bustling hub of activity, spirituality, and commerce, connecting major religious and yoga centers. The constant sway and the lively atmosphere make the crossing memorable. This bridge is the gateway to some of the most famous ashrams, including Parmarth Niketan, known globally for its spectacular evening Ganga Aarti. The bridge and the areas around it are purely vegetarian and alcohol-free, maintaining the sacred ethos of the holy city. The area is a fantastic spot for purchasing spiritual items, books, and local handicrafts. The bridge provides an excellent vantage point for photography and simply watching the life of Rishikesh unfold. It epitomizes the blend of spiritual fervor and natural beauty that defines Rishikesh.:

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport (Dehradun), approximately 20 KMS away. Taxis and cabs are readily available to reach the Ram Jhula area directly. The journey is about 45 minutes.

By Train: The nearest railway station is Rishikesh Railway Station (RKSH), about 4 KMS away. The major railhead is Haridwar Junction (HW), about 25 KMS away. From the Rishikesh station, take an auto-rickshaw or taxi to the Ram Jhula parking area, as vehicles cannot cross the bridge.

By Road: Ram Jhula is connected by the main road network that runs through Rishikesh and is easily accessible by car, taxi, or local bus. Vehicles must park in the designated parking lots on either side of the river, as the bridge itself is not for four-wheeled traffic. The drive from Delhi takes approximately 6-7 hours.

By Local Transport: Shared auto-rickshaws (Vikrams) are the most common and cost-effective local transport, connecting the main bus stand and station to the Ram Jhula area. Cycle-rickshaws are also available for short distances. The local bus service runs frequently, but a direct stop at the bridge is less common. You must complete the final stretch to the bridge on foot or by a two-wheeler taxi. :
