How To Reach Rishikund

Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, India:
Introduction and Overview: Rishikund (literally 'Pond of Sages') is an ancient, sacred pond located in the heart of the old city of Rishikesh, a short walk from Triveni Ghat. This holy water tank is historically significant, believed to have been formed by a blessing from the river Goddess Yamuna to the sage Kubz. Legend also links the pond to Lord Rama and his brother Lakshmana, who are said to have bathed here during their exile, further cementing its spiritual importance. The small, square pond is renowned for its unique feature: it holds warm water year-round, which is sourced from natural thermal springs (though its warmth can vary). Right next to the pond stands the historic Raghunath Temple, dedicated to Lord Rama and his consort, Sita. A popular sight is the reflection of the ancient temple visible in the calm, greenish-blue waters of the Rishikund, creating a serene and picturesque scene. Unlike the bustling ghats of the Ganga, the Rishikund offers a pocket of tranquility and deep spiritual history, making it a hidden gem for quiet contemplation. The atmosphere is deeply devotional, and it attracts local pilgrims seeking blessings before or after taking a holy dip at Triveni Ghat. It represents the ancient, deeply rooted pilgrimage tradition of Rishikesh before the era of suspension bridges and adventure sports. The small temple complex and the pond area are maintained by local devotees and trusts, emphasizing its role as a local heritage site.:

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport (Dehradun), approximately 18 KMS away. Taxis are the best way to reach the nearby Triveni Ghat area, from which the kund is a short walk. The journey takes about 40 minutes.

By Train: The nearest railway station is Rishikesh Railway Station, approximately 1 KM away. The major railhead is Haridwar Junction, about 25 KMS away. From the Rishikesh station, take a cycle-rickshaw, auto-rickshaw, or walk to the Triveni Ghat area.

By Road: Rishikund is located in the old, congested city center, which is often challenging for cars. Drive to the nearby Triveni Ghat parking area and then walk to the kund. It's a key location on the main pilgrimage route. The walk from the main road is short but through narrow, busy lanes.

By Local Transport: Cycle-rickshaws and auto-rickshaws are the most effective way to reach the vicinity of the kund from other parts of the city. As it is in the old, dense city center, the last few hundred meters must be walked on foot, which is recommended to truly experience the atmosphere of the old bazaar and pilgrimage town. :
