How To Reach Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary

A Botanical Paradise: The Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary is a protected area famous worldwide for its vast diversity of rhododendron species. Located within the scenic Yumthang Valley, the sanctuary covers an area of approximately 43 sq. kms and is set against a magnificent backdrop of high snow-cap ped mountains. The Lachung Chu river meanders through the sanctuary, enhancing its picturesque appeal. Rhododendron Diversity: The sanctuary boasts over 40 different species of rhododendron, ranging from small shrubs to tall trees, making it a dream destination for botanists and flower enthusiasts. The colors include vibrant reds, pinks, whites, purples, and yellows. The Bloom Spectacle: The main draw is the blooming season, typically from late March to mid-June, when the entire valley floor transforms into a riot of color, earning the entire region the moniker 'Valley of Flowers.' The flowers bloom sequentially according to altitude, prolonging the viewing period. Beyond Rhododendrons: In addition to the dominant rhododendrons, the sanctuary is home to many other alpine and sub-alpine flora, including primulas, potentillas, saxifrages, and the rare blue poppy, making it a rich biodiversity hotspot.

How to Reach

By Air: Nearest is Bagdogra Airport (IXB) (approx. 245 KMS). Taxi to Gangtok, then authorized vehicle to Lachung (overnight), then a 1. 5-hour drive to the sanctuary.

By Train: Nearest station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP) (approx. 240 KMS). Follow the same road route via Gangtok to Lachung, then proceed to the sanctuary.

By Road: The sanctuary is 25 KMS from Lachung town, located on the road to Yumthang Valley. It is a crucial stop on the day trip.

By Local Transport: Only authorized tourist vehicles are allowed to enter the sanctuary area. No public transport is available.
