How To Reach Sirhind Fort

Sirhind, Punjab, India
The Sirhind Fort, though mostly in ruins today, was once a formidable stronghold and a center of power for the Mughal Empire. Known as the "Gateway to India" because of its strategic location on the route from the northwest, the fort played a crucial role in many historical battles. It was the seat of the provincial governor, the most infamous of whom was Wazir Khan during the time of Guru Gobind Singh. The fort is inextricably linked with the tragic and heroic martyrdom of the younger sons of the tenth Sikh Guru, who were bricked alive within its walls (an event now commemorated at the nearby Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib). In 1710, Baba Banda Singh Bahadur attacked and razed much of the fort to avenge the Sahibzadas. Today, visitors can see the massive remnants of the brick walls, the old gates, and the high mounds that once supported grand structures. The ruins offer a somber and powerful atmosphere, telling a story of both imperial grandeur and ultimate resistance. The fort's proximity to other Mughal sites like Aam Khas Bagh suggests it was part of a larger royal complex. While nature has reclaimed much of the space, the scale of the ruins still impresses. It is a site of great pilgrimage for those tracing Sikh history and a place of deep interest for military historians. The fort serves as a reminder of the volatile and transformative period of the 18th century when the Mughal sun was setting and the Sikh power was rising in the plains of Punjab.
