How To Reach Tomb of Khudawand Khan

Surat, Gujarat, India
The Tomb of Khudawand Khan, locally referred to as the Roza of Khudawand Khan, is an elegant, unassuming yet historically significant mausoleum located in the dense, old city area near Chakla Bazaar and Sayedpura. This monument is the final resting place of Khwaja Safar Salmani, a Turkish soldier of distinction who served the Gujarat Sultanate and was given the title Khudawand Khan (Lord of the People). He is the same crucial figure who was responsible for the construction of the formidable Surat Castle (Old Fort) between 1540 and 1546 AD. The tomb is a remarkable, yet often overlooked, example of Indo-Islamic architectural style from the 16th century, likely constructed around the time of his death in 1546 or shortly after. The structure is characterized by its simplicity, intricate stone carvings, and a serene atmosphere, offering a tranquil historical pause amidst the bustling commercial activities of the old city that surround it. As one of the oldest surviving monuments of the Gujarat Sultanate period in Surat, the tomb serves as a silent, powerful testament to the city's rich, layered history and the significant figures who shaped its destiny. Its presence provides valuable insights into the prevalent architectural trends and the high artistic skills of the medieval era. For history buffs and architecture enthusiasts, discovering this humble yet majestic tomb, tucked away in the narrow lanes, is a rewarding experience and a glimpse into a time when Surat was a crucial global trading hub.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest airport is Surat International Airport (STV), which is about 18 KMS from the tomb's location in Sayedpura, Old City. Hire a taxi or an app-based cab for a direct journey, which usually takes about 40 minutes to reach the congested old city area.

By Train: The closest and most convenient major railway station is Surat Junction (ST), which is only about 3-4 KMS from the tomb. From the station, the best way to travel is by a dedicated auto-rickshaw (approximately 15 minutes). Be prepared to walk the final stretch, as the very narrow lanes of Chakla Bazaar are often inaccessible to cars and sometimes even to large auto-rickshaws.

By Road: The tomb is located in the extremely dense and commercial Old City area near Chakla Bazar and the fort. Access by private car is highly discouraged due to the narrow streets, lack of parking, and heavy pedestrian/street traffic. It is best to drive to the nearest major intersection (e. g. , Chowk Bazar) and complete the rest of the journey on foot or via a small auto-rickshaw.

By Local Transport: The monument is well-known to local auto-rickshaw drivers. The most efficient way to arrive is via a dedicated auto-rickshaw or an app-based taxi that will drop you as close as possible to the Chakla Bazaar/Sayedpura area, and then a short walk through the atmospheric lanes to the exact location of the tomb.
