Jaugada Fort

Berhampur, Odisha, India
Jaugada Fort is one of the most significant archaeological sites in India. It is famous for the Rock Edicts of Ashoka, dating back to 250 BCE. The site was an ancient provincial capital named Samapa. After the Kalinga War, Emperor Ashoka inscribed his messages of peace and non-violence here. The for t is surrounded by a massive earthen wall that was once part of a "Lac Fort" (Jaudurga). Legend connects it to the Mahabharata, saying it was built by Duryodhana. Today, it is a protected monument under the ASI. The location is scenic, situated near the Rushikulya River. It offers a deep dive into the Mauryan history of Odisha.
