Kailam Wildlife Sanctuary

Churachandpur, Manipur, @@Country Name: India:
Description: Kailam Wildlife Sanctuary is a significant protected forest area, covering 187.50 sq. km, located in the remote Kailam-Tipaimukh Hill Range. It is a crucial biodiversity hotspot characterized by Tropical Evergreen and Semi-evergreen Forest, with large areas of bamboo brakes. The sanctua ry is noted for its high altitude variation (518m – 2014m above MSL) and hilly terrain crisscrossed by numerous streams that feed into the Tuivai River. The main highlight of Kailam is its diverse avian population, particularly the presence of at least five varieties of hornbills (Great Indian hornbill, Rufous-necked hornbill, etc.). The sanctuary is home to many important fauna like Hoolock Gibbon, Leopard, Clouded Leopard, Serow, and various primates. Visiting this sanctuary requires prior planning, permits, and an adventurous spirit, as it is one of the lesser-known and less-developed protected areas in Manipur. The sanctuary's distance from the headquarters requires a dedicated journey along NH-150.:

    Fame Reason:

Hornbill Habitat and Rich Biodiversity: It is famous as one of the few places in Manipur and the North East that is home to five species of Hornbills, making it a key spot for serious bird watchers. Its high level of biodiversity, including endangered species like the Hoolock Gibbon and Clouded Leopard, gives it high ecological importance. It is a vital conservation area. The vast, remote, and unspoiled forest cover is its main draw. The Kailam-Tipaimukh Hill Range is a significant geographical feature. :

Dimension: The sanctuary covers a vast protected area of 187. 50 km2.

The human-made structures are minimal: forest rest houses (if any), check posts, and basic watchtowers. The focus is on ensuring the ecological integrity of the habitat. The hilly and rugged terrain is the primary architectural feature, with a large number of streams and thick forested hillsides defining the landscape. Any infrastructure will be rudimentary and built by the Forest Department for administration and research. :
