Lal Bagh Palace

Indore, Madhya Pradesh, India
The Lal Bagh Palace is one of the most magnificent and grandest buildings of the Holkar dynasty, spread over a sprawling 28 hectares (about 72 acres) on the banks of the Khan River. The construction of this massive palace began in 1886 under Maharaja Shivaji Rao Holkar and was finally completed in 1 921 by Maharaja Tukoji Rao Holkar III. Unlike the traditional Maratha architecture of Rajwada, the Lal Bagh Palace is a striking example of a purely European style, reflecting the global vision and sophisticated taste of the Holkar rulers during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The palace was used for state receptions and official functions until 1978, after which it was converted into a museum and is now maintained by the Directorate of Archaeology, Archives, and Museums, Government of Madhya Pradesh. It is a three-storeyed building with an extremely opulent interior that features Italian marble columns, grand chandeliers, rich Persian carpets, and ornate European furniture. One of the most famous features is the main entrance gate, which is a replica of the gates of Buckingham Palace in London, but it is said to be twice their size and carries the Holkar state emblem. The palace also houses a beautiful rose garden and a collection of rare coins from the Mughal era. The overall impression is one of unparalleled grandeur, giving visitors a sense of the lavish lifestyle led by the royal family. The palace stands as a unique cultural bridge, fusing Indian royal history with Western architectural aesthetics.
