Nainital Lake & Mall Road

Nainital, Uttarakhand, India
Nainital Lake, also known as Naini Lake, is a crescent-shaped freshwater body that serves as the centerpiece of the town. According to Hindu mythology, it is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, formed where the eyes (Naina) of Goddess Sati fell. The lake is surrounded by seven majestic hills, known as th e Sapta-Shring. Bordering the lake is the famous Mall Road, the main commercial and social hub of the town. Constructed by the British, the Mall Road connects the two ends of the lake: Tallital (the lower end) and Mallital (the upper end). The road is lined with colonial-style buildings, vibrant shops, cozy cafes, and luxury hotels. Walking along the Mall Road in the evening, with the shimmering lake on one side and the bustling market on the other, is the quintessential Nainital experience. The lake offers various boating options, from traditional rowboats to colorful pedal boats. The Naina Devi Temple stands at the northern shore, providing a spiritual anchor to the area. The Mall Road is a pedestrian-only zone during peak evening hours, allowing tourists to stroll freely. It is the best place to buy local handicrafts, handmade candles, and high-quality woolens. The reflection of the city lights in the lake at night is a sight that stays in the memory of every visitor.
