Nainital Zoo

Nainital, Uttarakhand, India
A Unique Alpine Habitat: The Pt. Govind Ballabh Pant High Altitude Zoo in Nainital is one of the few high-altitude zoos in North India, situated at an elevation of about 2,100 meters (6,890 ft) on the Sher Ka Danda hill. Established in 1984 and opened to the public in 1995, it plays a critical role in the conservation, breeding, and protection of endangered and threatened high-altitude Himalayan fauna. Spread over an area of approximately 4.6 hectares (about 11 acres), the zoo focuses on displaying animals in naturalistic habitat enclosures rather than traditional cages, a modern trend in zoological design. It is named after the first Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Bharat Ratna Pt. Govind Ballabh Pant. The zoo is a sanctuary for some of the region's most magnificent and elusive creatures, including the Snow Leopard, Siberian Tiger (historically), Himalayan Black Bear, Red Panda, Tibetan Wolf, and various high-altitude pheasant species like the vibrant Himalayan Monal (the state bird of Uttarakhand). The zoo offers an excellent opportunity for visitors to observe these animals, which would otherwise be impossible to see in the wild, while simultaneously educating the public on the delicate Himalayan ecosystem. Its location also offers beautiful views of the surrounding hills and a partially obscured view of Naini Lake. (Word Count Approx 400):

Moats, Barriers, and Terracing: Instead of simple bars, the design incorporates moats, electric barriers, net wires, and natural foliage to separate the animals from visitors, aligning with the modern zoo trend. Due to the location on Sher Ka Danda hill, the enclosures are often terraced or built into the hillside, mimicking the natural rocky and sloped environments of the animals.

Visitor Pathway Design: The paths are predominantly uphill and paved, designed to guide the visitor through the exhibits in a sequence, ensuring minimal disturbance to the animals while maximizing viewing angles. The high elevation (2,100m) is integrated into the exhibit design. :

Winter (October to February) is good for seeing the cold-weather animals like the Snow Leopard in active form, but dress warmly. Monsoon (July to September) is challenging due to the slippery, uphill paths.

Different Parts of the Day: Early Morning is highly recommended for increased animal activity and smaller crowds. Midday should be avoided due to the sun and the heat in the exposed sections of the path. :

    Other Different Topics Heading:

Do Not Feed: It is strictly forbidden to feed the animals; always respect the signs and the diet rules set by the zookeepers for the conservation of the species.

Conservation Contribution: The entry fee goes directly towards the care and conservation of the endangered species, a direct contribution to wildlife protection. :
