Phumdi

Phumdi, Manipur, India
Phumdi are the soul of the Loktak Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Northeast India. These are not solid landmasses but heterogeneous masses of vegetation, soil, and organic matter in various stages of decay. The largest of these phumdis forms the Keibul Lamjao National Park, which is the only f loating national park in the world. These islands are essential to the local ecosystem and provide a home to the endangered Sangai (brow-antlered deer). Approximately 4,000 people live on these floating islands in traditional huts called Phumsang. The phumdis vary in thickness from a few centimeters to two meters, and their cycle of sinking and floating is vital for the lake's health. Visitors can experience a world where everything literally floats on water, offering a surreal landscape that changes with the wind and seasons. It is a Ramsar site of international importance, representing the unique cultural and biological heritage of Manipur. The phumdis are also used for a unique form of aquaculture called Athapum, where artificial circular enclosures are created to trap fish, adding a geometric beauty to the lake's surface when viewed from above.

Dimensions vary greatly, with the largest single mass covering 40 Square Kilometers. The thickness remains between 1 to 2 Meters. Human-made Phumsang (huts) are built using bamboo, wood, and thatch, designed to be lightweight so they do not sink the floating base.
