Red Hill Lokpaching

Phumdi, Manipur, India
Red Hill Lokpaching, also known as Maibam Lokpaching, is a site of immense historical significance located on the road to Loktak Lake. During World War II in 1944, this small hillock was the site of a fierce battle between the British Allied Forces and the Japanese Army, supported by the Indian Nat ional Army (INA). It is named "Red Hill" because the soil was said to have turned red with the blood of the fallen soldiers. Today, it stands as a place of pilgrimage and peace. The site houses the India Peace Memorial, a monument built by the Japanese war veterans to honor their fallen comrades. It is a quiet, contemplative spot that offers a glimpse into the global impact of the war on the remote hills of Manipur. The hill offers a scenic view of the surrounding plains and the Tiddim Road. Many Japanese families visit every year to pay their respects, making it a bridge between the two nations. The history of the battle is documented in the nearby Imphal Peace Museum, which displays relics and personal belongings of the soldiers, providing a poignant reminder of the cost of war and the value of peace.
