Shukratal / Shukarteerath

Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, India
The Spiritual Epicenter of Shukratal: Shukratal, also known as Shukarteerath, is one of the most significant pilgrimage sites in India. This is the holy place where the sage Shukdev Goswami narrated the Srimad Bhagavatam to King Parikshit, the grandson of Arjuna, 5,000 years ago. The town is situate d on a hillock overlooking the old course of the Ganges river. The atmosphere is thick with devotion, with the sound of bells and Vedic chants echoing through the air constantly. At the heart of this town is the Akshay Vat, an undying banyan tree that witnessed the sacred narration. Unlike other banyan trees, this one is said to never shed its leaves, symbolizing eternal truth. The town is dotted with numerous temples, ashrams, and ghats where pilgrims perform rituals. It is often referred to as the "Varanasi of the West" due to its spiritual density and historical importance. Visitors feel a sense of timelessness here, as the stories of the Mahabharata come to life in the very soil of the town.
