History & Significance:: This museum, officially the Sanghol Archaeological Site Museum, is located in the historically significant village of Sanghol, also known as Uchha Pind, meaning 'high village', owing to its location on a large mound. The site's history spans back to the Harappan Civilisation (Indus Valley Civilization), a fact confirmed by numerous excavations. The museum's present building was inaugurated in April of 1990 by the Government of Punjab to preserve and display the treasures unearthed from the vast 200 KM mound. The site has also been referenced by the 7th-century Chinese traveller Hiuen Tsang, highlighting its ancient importance as a Buddhist center. The most prized possessions are 117 exquisitely carved sandstone sculptures (pillars, crossbars, and figurines) belonging to the Mathura School of Art from the 1st and 2nd century AD, alongside over 1500 other artifacts including coins, seals of Toramana and Mihirakula (rulers of Central Asia), and relics from the Harappan era, giving a profound glimpse into the cultural and historical evolution of the Malwa region of Punjab. The museum serves as a critical resource for historians and art enthusiasts studying early Indian art and settlement patterns, far surpassing the typical exhibits of a district museum, and its preservation efforts are central to understanding Punjab’s rich heritage and ancient links.:
