Travel Tips Of Chandanwari

Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, India
The Starting Point of the Sacred Journey: Chandanwari is a small, picturesque valley situated at an altitude of approximately 2,895 meters (9,500 ft). It is globally famous as the official starting point and base camp for the arduous and sacred Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage. Geographically, the valley i s located at the confluence of two streams and is surrounded by steep, rugged mountains, often retaining patches of snow year-round. The journey to Chandanwari from Pahalgam is highly scenic, passing through Betaab Valley. Its main visual features are the fast-flowing Lidder River, the pristine snow bridge (often present until early summer), and the stark, rocky terrain that marks the beginning of the high-altitude trek. During the yatra season (July-August), the place transforms into a bustling, spiritual hub, while outside of this season, it reverts to a quiet, serene mountain spot. The air is crisp, and the atmosphere carries a sense of spiritual reverence and rugged natural beauty. The environment is more raw and less developed than Aru or Betaab, emphasizing its role as a high-mountain transit point.

Tourism Tips

Health & Safety: The altitude is significantly higher; go slow and monitor for signs of altitude sickness. Wear waterproof shoes and clothing, especially if you plan to be near the snow patches, as the ground is often wet and slippery.

Packing: Heavy jackets and gloves are necessary even in summer. Carry water and high-energy snacks for the high altitude.

Accommodation: There are few permanent hotels. Most stay is in temporary tent camps or the large Langars during the Yatra. Pahalgam is the primary accommodation base.

Other Different Topics heading (Local Transport): Due to the high risk and steep roads, only certified local drivers should be used. The road is often closed suddenly due to landslides or snowfall, so always check with the local police or your hotel before starting.
