Travel Tips Of Monkey Point

Matheran, Maharashtra, India
Introduction to Monkey Point: Monkey Point is a prominent viewpoint in Matheran that offers one of the most spectacular views of the deep gorges and the rugged Western Ghats. As the name suggests, the place is frequently visited by groups of monkeys and langurs. It is a location where nature's playf ulness meets its grand scale. The Echo Phenomenon: One of the unique features of this point is the fascinating echo phenomenon. When you shout towards the Hart Cliff, the sound bounces back with remarkable clarity. This makes it a hit among children and groups who enjoy hearing their voices return from the vast valley. Scenic Vistas: The point provides an unhindered view of the surrounding mountains and the lush green vegetation that carpets the hills. From here, one can clearly see the distant Prabal Fort and the intricate rock formations of the Sahyadri range. It is particularly famous for its dramatic sunrise and sunset transitions. Wildlife and Nature: The area is a hotspot for observing the local wildlife in their natural habitat. The monkeys here are quite active and bold, often performing acrobatics on the cliffs. The surrounding woods are also home to diverse medicinal plants and rare bird species, making it a paradise for naturalists.

Tourism Tips

Beware of Monkeys: Do not carry plastic bags or food items openly. The monkeys are experts at snatching bags. Keep your camera and phone straps secured around your neck or wrist.

Packing: Comfortable hiking boots are a must. Carry a light jacket as the wind at the edge of the cliff can be quite chilly even during the summer months.

Connectivity: Signals can be weak at the very edge of the point. Inform your group of a meeting point in case you get separated, as GPS might be unreliable in the dense forest.

Cash Requirements: You will need cash for horse rides or small refreshments at the nearby stalls. The nearest ATM is back in the Matheran Market area.

Safety at the Edge: Never cross the safety railings for photos. The laterite soil can be crumbly and the drops are vertical. Stay within the designated viewing areas at all times.
