Travel Tips Of Potra Kund

Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, India
A Historic Reservoir of Legends: Potra Kund is a magnificent large water reservoir or stepwell situated just outside the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi complex. The name "Potra" is derived from the word "Pavitra," meaning pure, or according to local legends, from "Potra" meaning the baby clothes. It is tr aditionally believed that Mata Devaki and Vasudeva used the waters of this kund to wash the baby clothes of Lord Krishna after his birth in the prison cell. This kund was originally part of the massive prison complex of King Kansa. The water of this reservoir is considered extremely holy, and it is said that a dip here can purify the soul of all sins. Historically, the kund has been a silent witness to the various destructions and reconstructions of the adjacent temple. It remains one of the few ancient structures in Mathura that retains its original layout. The kund is connected to the Yamuna river via underground channels, ensuring a constant supply of water in ancient times. Today, it serves as a central point for pilgrims who visit the Janmabhoomi. During festivals like Janmashtami, the entire area around the kund is decorated with thousands of lamps, creating a celestial reflection in the water. The surrounding steps offer a place for devotees to sit and reflect on the divine events of the Lord's birth.
