Bhimkund Waterfall

Baripada, Odisha, India
Bhimkund Waterfall is a natural wonder situated on the border of Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar districts, approximately 125 km from Baripada. This site is not just a waterfall but a massive natural pool or "kund" formed in the bed of the Baitarani River. The water cascades down from a considerable height with a deafening roar, creating a mist that often creates rainbows in the sunlight. The surroundings are characterized by massive granite rock formations that have been carved into unique shapes by the force of the water over millions of years. According to local legend, the pool is bottomless, and several attempts to measure its depth have purportedly failed. The area is enveloped in a dense forest, providing a rugged and adventurous feel to the visit. There are two distinct parts of the waterfall, known as Sana Kunda and Bada Kunda, each offering a different perspective of the river's power. The site is a popular pilgrimage spot as well as a picnic destination, especially during the winter months. The sheer volume of water during the monsoon makes it a sight of terrifying beauty, while the crystal-clear turquoise waters in the summer offer a more serene experience. It is a place where the raw power of nature is on full display, making it a must-visit for anyone traveling through northern Odisha. :

Natural Rock Formations: Unlike man-made structures, the architecture here is purely geological. The "Kund" is a giant circular pool carved out of solid rock. The dimensions of the main pool are roughly 40 feet in diameter at the surface, with a depth that is locally believed to be immeasurable. Surrounding the water are massive boulders of metamorphic rock, some as large as small houses. A modern addition is the tall concrete watchtower built by the tourism department, which stands about 50 feet high, providing a safe vantage point to view the whirlpools and the falling water without getting too close to the slippery edges.
