The Regal Building, officially known as Bharucha Mansion, is one of Jamshedpur's most iconic and historically rich structures. It was constructed in 1935 by Khurshed Maneckji Bharucha, the first Indian Chief Cashier at Tata Steel. His initial vision was to create accommodation for young Parsi people who came to the city for work. The building gained its popular name, Regal Building, because it famously housed the Regal Talkies, a prominent cinema hall in the mid-20th century that became a cultural hub for the city's residents. The mansion stands as a proud sentinel at the entrance to the Bistupur area from Northern Town. Its history is deeply connected to the development of the city's infrastructure; legend holds that the steel used in its construction included leftover 'I' beams from the making of the Howrah Bridge in Kolkata (then Calcutta), which Tata Steel had supplied. This fact alone makes the structure a unique piece of Indian industrial and architectural history. The building's construction was a bold step in the 1930s, as the area was relatively sparse at the time. It took about three years to complete under the supervision of architects A. Dinshaw (a Parsi) and C.C. Bayigle (a British man). While the cinema hall (Regal Talkies) eventually closed in the mid-1980s, the building itself continues to be a vibrant commercial center, housing various shops, businesses, and the famous Café Regal, known for its vintage charm. The building's preservation is a subject of local pride and efforts to maintain its colonial-era legacy. It remains a visible, inspiring landmark that embodies the pioneering spirit of Jamshedpur's founders and early residents. It is a place where the old-world charm of the 'Raj era' meets the bustling modern city life of today.
