FAQs On Samanar Hills / Samanar Malai

Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India
Samanar Malai, meaning 'Jain Hill', is a prominent rocky hillock near Madurai that holds immense historical and religious significance, primarily associated with Jainism. It is an important archaeological site protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The hill contains numerous natural caverns, which were modified and inhabited by Jain monks (Samanar) who practiced asceticism here from the 1st century BCE to the 10th century CE. These caves served as their monastic retreat and shelter, particularly during the rainy season. The primary attractions are the detailed rock-cut sculptures of Jain Tirthankaras and the ancient Tamil-Brahmi and Vatteluttu inscriptions found within and around the caves. The most significant carvings are the Settipodavu (a large sculpture of Lord Mahavira) and Pechchipallam (a set of eight sculptures including Lord Bahubali). The inscriptions provide valuable historical evidence about the patronage of Jainism by local merchants and the practice of Sallekhana (fasting unto death) by the monks. The hill is a tangible link to a period when Jainism flourished in South India, especially in the Pandya kingdom, co-existing with other faiths. The serene, natural environment of the hill, with its occasional lotus pond and natural spring, adds to the site's spiritual and picturesque appeal. The site is a testament to the ascetic traditions that shaped early Tamil culture and history, offering a rare opportunity to literally walk in the footsteps of ancient saints and scholars.
