How To Reach Dead Stone Point

Netarhat, Jharkhand, India
Dead Stone Point is one of the more secluded and less commercialized natural viewing spots around the main Netarhat hill station. Unlike the bustling Magnolia Point or Netarhat Dam, this location offers a rugged, raw experience of the Chota Nagpur plateau's grandeur. The name, Dead Stone Point or De ad Rock Point, is derived from the geological formation of the specific cluster of laterite and crystalline rocks that characterize the viewpoint. These ancient, weathered stones form a natural balcony overlooking a deep valley, providing a unique vantage point different from the sweeping, open valley views seen elsewhere. The atmosphere here is one of profound silence and solitude, surrounded by the thick, evergreen forests of Sal, Kendu, and Mahua. The location is particularly appreciated by trekkers and nature enthusiasts who seek a quiet communion with the wilderness. The viewpoint serves as an excellent site for observing the unique Pat region landscape, characterized by flat-topped hills. It’s an ideal place for reflection, away from the typical tourist crowds, making it a peaceful and spiritually grounding experience. The dense foliage contributes to a significantly cooler microclimate, enhancing the feeling of being deep within nature's heart. The geology of the point highlights the region's ancient past, where millions of years of erosion have shaped the hard, dead-looking stones into the perfect natural observation deck. This spot truly embodies the untouched beauty for which Netarhat is famously called the "Queen of Chotanagpur." The relative lack of modern development preserves its pristine natural charm.

How to Reach

By Air : The nearest major airport is Birsa Munda Airport (IXR) in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand. Ranchi is approximately 156 KMS away from Netarhat. From the airport, visitors can hire pre-paid taxis or private cabs directly to Netarhat. The drive takes about 4 to 5 hours and is scenic, passing through winding roads and thick forests, especially the final ghat section. International travelers will need to first fly into a major metropolitan city in India like Delhi, Mumbai, or Kolkata, and then take a domestic flight to Ranchi. Ensure your transportation is pre-arranged, especially if arriving late in the day.

By Train : The nearest major railway station is Ranchi Junction (RNC), also about 156 KMS away. Ranchi is well-connected to major Indian cities like New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Patna. Another closer but less major option is Lohardaga Railway Station, about 76 KMS away, but connectivity is limited. From the railway station, the most comfortable way to reach Netarhat is by hiring a private taxi or cab, which are readily available outside the station. Booking a vehicle for a round trip is often more economical.

By Road : Netarhat is very well-connected by road, often referred to as the Queen of the Chota Nagpur plateau due to its accessible route. Regular government-operated and private buses ply from Ranchi and Daltonganj (Medininagar) to Netarhat. The road journey is highly scenic, involving a climb through the ghat (mountain) sections. For maximum comfort and flexibility, hiring a private car or self-driving is recommended. From Ranchi, take NH-39 (or NH-23) towards Gumla or Ghaghra, and then follow the signs to Netarhat. Once in the main Netarhat town (Bus Stand/Bazaar Haat), Dead Stone Point is a short 4-5 KMS drive or hike. Local jeep taxis or rented bikes can cover this final distance.

By Local Transport : In Netarhat town, the most common forms of local transport are shared jeep taxis (TATA Magic/Winger) or local private rental cars/motorcycles. Since Dead Stone Point is only a short distance from the center, you can easily negotiate a round-trip fare with a local cab for an hour or two. Alternatively, for the adventurous, the journey is an easy to moderate 4-5 KMS hike through the pleasant forest, making it a great morning walk. Always use a local guide for forest trails.
