How To Reach Sunset Point Netarhat

Netarhat, Jharkhand, India
Sunset Point Netarhat, popularly known as Magnolia Point, is a stunning natural viewpoint perched atop the Netarhat plateau in the Latehar district of Jharkhand, India. Often described as the "Queen of Chotanagpur," Netarhat itself is a beautiful hill station, and Magnolia Point is its crown jewel, famous for offering one of the most mesmerizing sunset views in India. The point provides a panoramic vista of the undulating hills, dense forests of Sal and Pine, and deep valleys of the Chotanagpur plateau. The sight of the sun dipping below the horizon, painting the sky with fiery hues of orange, red, and purple, is a truly magical and unforgettable experience. The name Magnolia Point is derived from the Magnolia trees that once dotted the landscape, but it is also strongly linked to a poignant local legend of a British girl named Magnolia and a local shepherd. This romantic, yet tragic, tale of unfulfilled love adds a layer of mystical charm to the natural beauty of the place, making it a compelling spot for visitors. The cool, pleasant climate and the serene atmosphere make it a perfect retreat for nature lovers, photographers, and those seeking peace away from city life. It stands at an elevation of approximately 3,700 feet above sea level. The viewpoint has been developed with platforms to accommodate tourists, ensuring a clear and safe vantage point for the spectacular evening show. The tranquility that descends upon the place after the sunset is almost as captivating as the sunset itself, encouraging visitors to linger and soak in the peaceful wilderness.

How to Reach

By Air:: The nearest airport is Birsa Munda Airport (IXR) in Ranchi, the capital city of Jharkhand. Ranchi is approximately 150 to 160 KMS from Netarhat. From the airport, visitors can hire a taxi (private or pre-booked) or take a public bus to reach Netarhat. The drive is scenic and takes about 4 to 5 hours. It is advisable to pre-arrange a taxi service for a smoother journey from the airport.

By Train:: The nearest major railway station is Latehar Railway Station (LTHR), which is about 90 KMS from Netarhat. Another major railhead is Ranchi Railway Station (RNC), which is better connected to major Indian cities and is about 155 KMS away. From either station, the remaining journey must be completed by road, usually by hiring a taxi or a local jeep service. The road journey from Latehar is shorter but may have fewer transport options compared to Ranchi.

By Road:: Reaching Netarhat by road is the easiest and most convenient way. Netarhat is well-connected by road networks from Ranchi, Daltonganj, and other major towns in Jharkhand. You can take a private car, hired taxi, or utilize the state-run bus service (Jharkhand Tourism buses are available from Ranchi). The road from Ranchi (via Lohardaga) is well-maintained and offers scenic views. The distance from Ranchi is roughly 150-160 KMS, and the drive takes approximately 4-5 hours.

By Local Transport:: Once you reach the Netarhat town (Bus Stand or main market area), Magnolia Sunset Point is about 8 to 10 KMS away. From here, you can hire a local taxi, a shared jeep, or an auto-rickshaw to cover the short distance to the viewpoint. The local transport services are generally reliable and the fare can be negotiated. It is best to arrange for the return trip as well, as transport can be scarce immediately after sunset when most tourists leave.
