How To Reach Surat Castle

Surat, Gujarat, India
The Surat Castle, locally known as Puratnu Killa or Old Fort, is a magnificent historical fortress that stands proudly on the eastern bank of the Tapi River in the heart of the city's ancient Chowk Bazar area. Constructed between 1540 and 1546 AD by Khudawand Khan (Khwaja Safar Salmani), a Turkish s oldier and the then Governor under Gujarat Sultan Mahmud Shah III, its primary purpose was to defend the prosperous port city of Surat against the incessant naval attacks and raids by the Portuguese. The fort boasts a rich and tumultuous history, passing through the hands of the Mughals after Emperor Akbar's conquest in 1573, and later being seized by the Siddi admiral of the Mughal fleet, before eventually falling under the control of the British East India Company in 1759. This fortress has been recently and extensively restored by the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), which has transformed it into a well-maintained, engaging historical museum and cultural center. Today, visitors can explore the massive defensive walls, the robust bastions (burj), and the meticulously restored moat and drawbridge. Inside, the fort houses a museum that showcases a collection of artifacts, paintings, and historical documents that narrate the fort's long history and Surat's crucial role in global maritime trade. A short documentary further brings the stories of this ancient fortification to life, making it a powerful and essential symbol of Surat's resilience and medieval military architecture.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest major airport is Surat International Airport (STV), located approximately 18 KMS from the fort. The fastest way to reach the central city area is by pre-paid taxi or a ride-sharing service. The drive takes around 40-50 minutes, depending on the city traffic, especially as the fort is located in the older, denser part of Surat.

By Train: The closest and most convenient major railway station is Surat Junction (ST), which is only about 1. 5 to 2 KMS from the fort. From the station, the fort is easily reachable by a quick auto-rickshaw ride (approximately 10 minutes) or even a brisk walk. Since the fort is located in the old city, auto-rickshaws are often the best local transport option for navigating the narrow, busy streets.

By Road: Surat Castle is located in the congested but central Chowk Bazar area of Old Surat. While it is easily accessible by road from NH 48 and other major city roads, driving a personal car can be challenging due to limited parking and narrow lanes. It is best to park outside the immediate vicinity and walk or arrive via public transport. The address is a famous landmark known to all local drivers.

By Local Transport: The fort is a main hub and is very well-served by local transport. Auto-rickshaws, city buses, and app-based taxis frequently ply the routes leading to the Chowk Bazar area. It is a very central location, making it highly accessible from the rest of the city, and it is advisable to get dropped off at the nearest wide intersection and walk the final few hundred meters.
