Travel Tips Of Surat Castle

Surat, Gujarat, India
The Surat Castle, locally known as Puratnu Killa or Old Fort, is a magnificent historical fortress that stands proudly on the eastern bank of the Tapi River in the heart of the city's ancient Chowk Bazar area. Constructed between 1540 and 1546 AD by Khudawand Khan (Khwaja Safar Salmani), a Turkish s oldier and the then Governor under Gujarat Sultan Mahmud Shah III, its primary purpose was to defend the prosperous port city of Surat against the incessant naval attacks and raids by the Portuguese. The fort boasts a rich and tumultuous history, passing through the hands of the Mughals after Emperor Akbar's conquest in 1573, and later being seized by the Siddi admiral of the Mughal fleet, before eventually falling under the control of the British East India Company in 1759. This fortress has been recently and extensively restored by the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), which has transformed it into a well-maintained, engaging historical museum and cultural center. Today, visitors can explore the massive defensive walls, the robust bastions (burj), and the meticulously restored moat and drawbridge. Inside, the fort houses a museum that showcases a collection of artifacts, paintings, and historical documents that narrate the fort's long history and Surat's crucial role in global maritime trade. A short documentary further brings the stories of this ancient fortification to life, making it a powerful and essential symbol of Surat's resilience and medieval military architecture.

Tourism Tips

Health & safety: Be careful when walking on the ramparts and staircases, as the old stone can be uneven or slippery, especially in the monsoon. Since the area is central and often crowded, keep valuables secure. Carry water, as the open ramparts are hot during midday.

Packing: Wear light, comfortable, and breathable clothing, especially if visiting in the warmer months. Sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes are essential for navigating the old stone steps and ramparts safely. A good zoom lens for a camera can capture the river view and architectural details effectively.

Accommodation: Staying in the central areas near Surat Junction or along Ring Road will provide the best access to the fort and other old city sights. The Athwalines area also has many high-quality hotels within a reasonable taxi ride.

Other Different Topics heading:

Guided Tours: Inquire at the ticket counter for any available official

Guided Tours or audio guides. These are often inexpensive and provide valuable historical context that the museum plaques might miss, significantly enriching the visit.

Local Cuisine: The Chowk Bazar area surrounding the fort is famous for traditional Surati street food and sweets, especially local snacks. Plan to sample the local delicacies like Locho, Khaman, or Surati Ghari after your visit to complete the cultural experience.
