Kanpur Museum
The Kanpur Museum, also known as the Kanpur Sangrahalaya, is the city's official museum located within the historic King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hall. It serves as a comprehensive archive of Kanpur's journey from a small village to a major industrial hub known as the "Manchester of the East." The mus eum was officially established in 1999 to preserve the artifacts that were previously scattered across various government buildings. Its galleries are divided into several sections: the Freedom Struggle Gallery, the Industrial Growth Gallery, and the Colonial Era Gallery. Visitors can see handwritten letters of freedom fighters, old maps of the city, and a collection of vintage weaponry including a massive colonial artillery gun. The museum also showcases the evolution of the leather and textile industries which made Kanpur world-famous. One of the most fascinating exhibits is the collection of 19th-century costumes and lifestyle items used by the British residents.
