Lloyd's Botanical Garden

Darjeeling, West Bengal, India
Lloyd's Botanical Garden is a historic and sprawling sanctuary of flora located on the open slopes of Darjeeling. Established in 1878 on land donated by William Lloyd, the garden spans approximately 40 acres and serves as a distant annexe of the Royal Botanic Garden in Kolkata. It is meticulously d ivided into three distinct sections: the upper section containing indigenous Himalayan plants, the middle section housing a vast collection of ferns and conifers, and the lower section featuring exotic species from around the world including Australia and Africa. The garden is a treasure trove for botanists and nature lovers, home to over 2,500 species of orchids and the rare "living fossil" tree Ginkgo Biloba. Its tranquil paths wind through ancient oaks, vibrant rhododendrons, and magnolias, offering a serene escape from the bustle of the town. The garden plays a vital role in the conservation of endangered mountain plants and provides an educational environment for students and researchers alike. It is famously known for its "Weeping Willow" trees and the dedicated student section that showcases the medicinal plants of the Sikkim Himalayas. Visitors can explore the glass-roofed conservatory which houses cacti and succulents, creating a micro-climate suitable for non-mountainous species. The garden's layout follows the natural topography of the hill, making every turn a discovery of new botanical wonders. It remains one of the most significant high-altitude botanical gardens in Asia, preserving the natural heritage of the Eastern Himalayas for over a century.
