Lower Lake

Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India
Nawabi Era Heritage and City Life: The Lower Lake, or Chhota Talaab (Small Lake), is a historic water body constructed in 1794 AD by Chhote Khan, a minister of Nawab Hayat Muhammad Khan Bahadur. It forms the twin lakes of Bhopal along with the Upper Lake (Bada Talaab), from which it is separated by the Pul Pukhta (Lower Lake Bridge). The lake was built to enhance the city's beauty and for water supply. While smaller than the Upper Lake, it is centrally located and is surrounded by the bustling Old City areas. It is a key ecological component of the Bhoj Wetland and offers a unique perspective on Bhopal's skyline and urban blend of nature and heritage.

Dam and Bridge Structure: The lake was created by merging several older wells and constructing an earthen dam/embankment on its eastern side. The defining architectural feature is the Pul Pukhta (Lower Lake Bridge), which is a historical masonry structure separating it from the Upper Lake.

Nawabi Era Construction: The construction style is typical of the late 18th-century Bhopal Nawabi regime, which prioritized large-scale public utility works that also served an aesthetic purpose.

Dimensions and Catchment: The lake has an area of approximately 1. 29 sq. KMS and a catchment area of 9. 6 sq. KMS. Its historical maximum depth was about 11. 7 meters. The bridge's robust stone and mortar construction reflects the durability of the time's civil engineering.
