Markandeswar Temple

Puri, Odisha, India
Markandeswar Temple is one of the oldest and most significant Shaivite shrines in Puri. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it is inextricably linked to the legend of Sage Markandeya, who is said to have performed intense penance here to win immortality. The temple is situated beside the massive Markandeswar Tank, which is one of the five sacred tanks (Pancha Tirtha) of Puri. Devotees believe that a dip in this tank washes away all sins before they enter the Jagannath Temple. The temple structure dates back to the 12th Century, built during the reign of the Ganga Dynasty. The atmosphere inside the temple complex is deeply spiritual, filled with the scent of incense and the sound of bells. The presiding deity is worshipped as Markandeswar Mahadeva. The temple is also famous for its association with the Jagannath cult, as many rituals of the main temple involve a visit to this shrine. For instance, during the Chandan Yatra, the deities are brought to the nearby tanks for a ritual cruise. The temple walls are adorned with ancient inscriptions that provide valuable historical data about the medieval period of Odisha. Despite its location in a busy residential 'Sahi' (lane), once you enter the gates, there is a sense of profound ancient peace. It is a place where history, mythology, and living faith converge.

The main spire rises to a height of about 60 feet. The dimensions of the temple base are approximately 40x70 feet. The temple is constructed using laterite and sandstone.
