Puri Jagannath Temple
The Puri Jagannath Temple is a monumental 12th-century structure dedicated to Lord Jagannath, a form of Lord Vishnu. It is one of the most sacred Char Dham pilgrimage sites for Hindus. The temple was built by King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva of the Eastern Ganga dynasty. The main deities are Lord Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra, and sister Subhadra. Unlike traditional stone or metal idols, these are carved from sacred Neem wood and are replaced every 12 or 19 years in a ritual called Nabakalebara. The temple complex is massive, covering over 400,000 square feet and surrounded by high fortified walls. It serves as a spiritual heart for millions, especially during the world-famous Rath Yatra. The kitchen here is the largest in the world, where food for thousands is cooked daily in earthen pots over wood fires. Every ritual, from the daily flag-changing atop the spire to the vast offerings of Mahaprasad, reflects ancient Vedic traditions. The Wheel and Flag: Atop the temple is the Neelachakra, an eight-spoked wheel made of eight metals, measuring about 11 feet high. The flag, known as Patitapabana, is changed daily by priests who climb the spire without any safety gear, a tradition followed for over 800 years. -
