Potagarh

Puri, Odisha, India
Potagarh, which literally translates to "Buried Fort," is a historical treasure located at the mouth of the Rushikulya River. Though it is a bit of a drive from Puri, it is a essential stop for those interested in the colonial and medieval history of Odisha. The fort is unique because it holds the remnants of three different eras: the Muslim period, the French occupation, and the British Raj. It was once the administrative headquarters of the Ganjam district before a deadly plague in the 19th Century forced the residents to abandon it. The fort is star-shaped and surrounded by a deep moat. Today, it stands in a state of picturesque ruin, with massive walls, gateways, and the remains of a powder magazine and administrative buildings. The architectural styles of the different rulers are visible in the various layers of construction. The site is serene, overlooking the river and the distant sea. Walking through the ruins, one can see the massive thick walls that were designed to withstand naval attacks. The fort has been a witness to many battles and shifts in power. It is now a protected site under the Odisha State Archaeology. The surrounding area is quiet, with the river breeze blowing through the old arches. It offers a stark contrast to the temple-heavy itinerary of Puri, providing a glimpse into the military and colonial past of the region.
