Historical Significance: The modern temple, completed in 1931 by the Maha Bodhi Society of India, stands near the ruins of the original Mulagandha Kuti (meaning "fragrant dwelling"), which is believed to be where the Buddha spent the first rainy season (Vassa) after his first sermon. The temple was built to revive Buddhism in India. Its walls are adorned with magnificent frescoes by the renowned Japanese artist Kosetsu Nosu, depicting the major events in the Buddha's life.
