National Library of India

Kolkata, West Bengal, India
The National Library of India is the largest library in the country by volume and an institution of national importance. It is housed in the majestic Belvedere Estate in Alipore, which was once the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal and even the Viceroy of India. The library's origins date back to the Calcutta Public Library formed in 1836. After independence, it was renamed and moved to its current location. The library holds a staggering collection of over 2.2 million books, manuscripts, and maps. It is a mandatory recipient of every book published in India under the Delivery of Books Act. The sprawling 30-acre campus is a lush green oasis in the heart of the city, featuring old banyan trees and beautifully manicured gardens. The main building, Belvedere House, is a fine example of Italian Renaissance architecture. Inside, the massive reading rooms, high ceilings, and endless rows of wooden bookshelves create an atmosphere of intellectual grandeur. The library also houses rare collections in various Indian and foreign languages. In recent years, it has undergone modernization with digital archives and a new Bhasha Bhavan building. For scholars and students, it is a sanctuary for research. For the casual visitor, the historic architecture and the serene grounds offer a peaceful retreat. The library is also famous for the "hidden chamber" discovered by the ASI in 2010, a room with no doors or windows that fueled many local legends and ghost stories.
