Pumlen Lake

Bishnupur, Manipur, India
Pumlen Lake (also known as Pumlen Pat) is the second largest freshwater lake in Manipur, located in the southern part of the Bishnupur district. Unlike the more famous Loktak Lake, Pumlen remains largely untouched by mass tourism, offering a raw and authentic look at the state's wetland ecosystem. The lake is a complex system of open water, floating islands known as Phumdis, and surrounding marshlands. It is a critical habitat for a variety of migratory birds that arrive in thousands during the winter months from Siberia and other parts of the world. The local fishing communities live in harmony with the lake, using traditional wooden canoes to navigate its shallow waters. The lake is bounded by the Ithai Barrage on one side, which has significantly altered its ecology over the years. Despite these changes, it remains a breathtakingly beautiful spot, especially during sunrise and sunset when the water turns into a giant mirror reflecting the colorful sky. For those looking for an offbeat destination, Pumlen Lake provides an opportunity to see the traditional Manipuri way of life, from fishing techniques to the collection of edible aquatic plants. It is a place of quiet beauty, where the only sounds are the ripples of the water and the calls of the birds.
