Thinungei Bird Sanctuary

Bishnupur, Manipur, India
General Information: Thinungei Bird Sanctuary is a relatively new conservation area located on the western fringes of Loktak Lake. It was established to protect the diverse migratory and resident bird species that flock to the wetlands of Bishnupur. The sanctuary is a haven for ornithologists and bi rd watchers, especially during the winter months when birds from Siberia and Europe migrate here. The landscape consists of swampy marshes and shallow lake waters, providing the perfect nesting ground for species like the Yellow-breasted Bunting and various ducks. It is a quiet, less-crowded alternative to the main lake areas, offering a peaceful environment for nature photography. The local community is actively involved in the conservation efforts, ensuring that the ecological balance is maintained. It serves as a vital green lung for the region and a classroom for environmental education.
